Prof. Dr. med. Stefan Hinterwimmer is one of Germany’s leading specialists in the field of knee surgery and heads expert groups of several national and international specialized societies.

Professor Hinterwimmer’s clinical and scientific activities focus on joint preservation in the form of cruciate ligament surgery and revisions, joint conversion surgeries, meniscus sparing surgeries and complex patellar surgeries.

Surgical and conservative therapy: cruciate ligament injuries (preservation or replacement of the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments), collateral ligament injuries (preservation and replacement of the internal and external ligaments and capsule), complex injuries of the knee joint, including dislocations and fractures of the knee joint, meniscal tears and trauma meniscus root (emphasis on meniscus preservation), patellar instability (patella stabilization, including complex interventions such as torsion osteotomies and trochleoplasties), cartilage injuries and damage (all methods of cartilage preservation), limitation of motion in the knee joint (articular solution = arthrosis), arthrosis of the knee joint (total preservation of the joint by conversion surgery, partial preservation of the joint by sled or trochlear prostheses), injuries of the tendons in the knee joint and pelvis (tendon reconstruction), restrictions of movement and cartilage injuries and fractures of the ankle joint.

• 1989–1996 – medical education at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation. Study in South Africa, several times in England, China and Switzerland.
• 1997-2006: Work and advanced training in the surgical clinic in the city center of LMU Munich.
• Since 2007, head physician of the department of sports orthopedics at the University Hospital Rechts der Isar in Munich.
• 2013 independent senior physician Sportsclinic Germany Munich.
• In 2014, the joint practice OrthoPlus Munich and MVZ Alte Börse Munich was founded.
